Pueblo West Parks and Recreation Facilities:

Cattail Crossing

Cattails Crossing

Cattail Crossing is a 3.75 acre pond located on property owned by Pueblo West Metropolitan District (PWMD), adjacent to the Desert Hawk Golf Course in Pueblo West. While not currently open for public fishing, because of accessibility and overgrowth of vegetation in the water, the pond offers an excellent opportunity to provide a healthy aquatic environment for a variety of fish species and to increase angling opportunities for youth (age 15 and under) and persons with disabilities.

In 2002, Janean Jubic, an enthusiastic angler and freshman at Pueblo West High School, proposed to the Pueblo County Commissioners and the PWMD that a fishing pond be developed for these special populations. As the County, PWMD and the Colorado Division of Wildlife further planned the project, several other local business and civic organizations including the Rotary Club of Pueblo West and Abel Engineering became involved and pledged financial resources and in-kind support for the project.

Pueblo West is a rapidly growing area with a conservatively estimated population at 32,100 today. With children (age 15 and under) representing approximately 25% of the Pueblo West population, it is expected that 4,500 residents are potential users of the pond and park facilities. Although Pueblo Reservoir is located approximately 2 miles from Cattail Crossing, this fishing pond will increase youth angling opportunities in a secure and controlled environment in central Pueblo West.
