Basketball (Fall 2010)

The Pueblo West Parks and Recreation offers recreational, non-competitive basketball for
boys and girls during Fall & Spring seasons.


PROGRAM DATES - SATURDAYS

October 16 to November 20, 2010


Youth Basketball is a co-ed recreational program for all boys and girls ages 5-12. Kids will learn the fundamentals of basketball, focusing on the skills needed and the rules of the game to prepare both boys and girls for team play. The kids will have lots of fun.

    PRACTICES: Practices are the first 20 minutes before each weekly game

    GAMES: Anywhere between 8am & 2pm.

    COST: $25.00 per child. There is a $25 fee on any returned check and there are NO REFUNDS AFTER PROGRAM START DATE.

    COACHES MEET: Thursday, October 7 from 6-8pm at the Parks and Rec office.

    REGISTRATION: Click on the link to the left side of this page to download the registration form, fill it out and drop it off with fee to the Parks Office before September 30.

*Deadlines are established to meet team selection and scheduling for game times and coach meetings. Late registrations are subject to late fees if availability on teams permit for the program. For more information, please contact the Parks and Recreation office at 547-7400.




Youth Basketball Rules

1. All teams must have a maximum of five (5) players on the court.
2. EACH PLAYER is required to play at least two full uninterrupted quarters (provided there are no more than ten players available).
3. No player will be allowed to play in more than three quarters.
4. Length of Game: Maximum length will be 40 minutes, with a running clock (please have players on and off the court in a timely manner). Four eight minute quarters.
5. Except for the start of the game, there will be no jump balls. Alternating possession rule will be used on all jump ball situations.
6. Once a child has rebounded the ball or is taking the ball out under the opposing team's basket, defense must allow offense to bring the ball down the court.
7. We will only be running a zone defense. Double teaming will not be allowed.
8. Players are disqualified after the 5th personal foul. Players will be pulled from the game for unsportsmanlike behavior.
9. Free-throw line will be at the 8-foot line (halfway between the free-throw line and the bottom of the circle (7-8 year olds). Free-throws will be only shot if the player is fouled in the act of shooting. All other fouls will result in the ball being taken out of bounds.
10. Substitutions will be made only at the end of each quarter, unless there is an injury.
11. Each team must provide one official per game.
12. We want to put emphasis on sportsmanship and enjoying the game rather than winning.


LIABILITY - Parents should be aware that there is some risk involved in activities of this nature, and that all participants do so at their own risk. Parents signed a waiver with registration form.

PRACTICES - Every Saturday, you will practice for 20 minutes and play for 40 minutes.

SPECTATORS - Please remember these coaches are parents that signed up to volunteer, and are working to help provide an atmosphere in which each child can experience the enjoyment of participation and play. THEY ARE NOT PROFESSIONALS! Please be courteous and kind.

PROGRAM PURPOSE - This program is designed to provide youth with the opportunity to participate in an organized sports program that will emphasize basic skills, sportsmanship, enjoyment, and cooperative participation with peers. NO SCORES ARE TO BE KEPT.

CONDUCT - It shall be the responsibility of all spectators, parents, and participants to conduct themselves in a proper and sportsmanlike manner. Any individual who, in the opinion of the league director, is conducting him or herself in an improper manner shall receive warning to stop such conduct. Should the individual not comply, he or she will be requested to leave the facility.

2. Each player is required to play at least two full quarters.
3. Length of game. Maximum length of game will be 40 minutes, with a running clock.
There will 4--8 minute quarters.
4. We will be using the mini size basketball.
5. We will lower the baskets to 8 feet.
6. The free throw line will be moved in to the 8 foot line (halfway between the free-throw line and the bottom of the circle).
7. Only shooting fouls will be assessed. All other fouls will be brought in from the top of the key.
8. No zone defense is allowed. You must play person to person. Double teaming is not permitted.
9. Back court penalties will be assessed. The ball will turn over to the other team. They will bring it in from the top of the key.
10. Substitutions can only take place during time out or at the end of quarters.
11. A player must attempt to dribble the ball while moving in any direction. Players will not be allowed to take more than 3 steps without the ball being bounced.
12. We will only be using half of the court. The ball will be brought in each time by a player at the top of the key. Defensive players will not be allowed to go past the free throw line. In other words, past the free throw line is a safety zone until the ball is in play.
13. Each team must provide one official per game.
